What first brought you to China?
After majoring in Fine Arts at the best ceramics program in the world (Alfred University), I got a Master’s in Fine Arts (ceramics) from Kansas State University. After graduate school, I taught for a year at Kansas State University. I then went to Europe for a year, which included six great months in Georgia. I returned to Philadelphia for 3 months where I was offered a chance to go with a friend to do a residency at a Ceramics Art Museum in Shangyu, Zhejiang.
How did you come to teach at RDF?
I met my future wife, who is also a ceramics artist, in 2016 when I went to Jingdezhen to rent a studio to make artwork for an exhibition in Shanghai.Because Jingdezhen is the porcelain epicenter of the world and largest producer of porcelain and ceramics even still today, artists from all over the world want to go there to work. My wife and I started a residency for foreign professional artists and then a summer camp to help us pay for the residency. Once COVID struck, our residency program and camp had to pause. I then applied to teach here at RDF.
What is it about teaching that you find so alluring?
I have been surprised by how much I like teaching. I wasn’t sure how I’d like it. I can say that It has gone better than I expected. I like the energy of the students. I like that I get to rethink things that I haven’t thought about in some time. When you’re teaching you have to be sure that you can explain it bit by bit. I like seeing how the students understand and this in turns help me to fill in gaps in my own understanding.
Why is art important to a school’s curriculum?
Art should be in the curriculum because it fosters creative thinking. Art is, of course, open-ended. In art there is no predetermined end goal. Students must chart their own path and make their own goals. I think that art is more important for students than it is for the world. Of course, there are certain artists who have been very important, such as Picasso or Manet, who made real philosophical changes in the world through art. I would not make an argument that art in general is valuable in the way that medicine or science is, and rare is an artist who has a real effect on the culture outside of their community. Art making as a practiced skill however, can do for an individual what those rare artists due for the culture at large, which is why it is such an important thing to offer to students.
What advice do you have for RDF parents?
Think about your student as an individual, especially when it comes to thinking about college. Pay more attention to program fit than ranking or prestige. Of course, ranking matters—my undergraduate school had the best ceramics program in the world—but only if the ranking applies to your child. In other words, make sure the ranking fits what’s good for your student. I was accepted into the top graduate ceramics program, but I decided to go to another school for some very specific reasons. I am glad that I made that decision.
What advice do you have for RDF students?
Read. When I was in my late teens and early twenties, I only read art theory and non-fiction. I thought I needed to learn a lot of facts. That was fine but I don’t read any of that stuff anymore. I only read novels now. I think you learn as much from fiction as you do from reading about facts. Read in your non-native language.Read in your native language. Seek books out that cover topics that you enjoy. If what you’re reading is tedious, just stop and find something else.
