Since we began teaching online, I have happily discovered that distance (online) learning does not have to mean a “distancing” in our relationship to our students. In fact, over the past 9 weeks of corresponding with my students on the Canglory platform, I feel I have grown to know them even better as individuals. “Distance” in this case has helped me develop a more meaningful connection to my students, which I believe will benefit us all once we return to the physical classroom!

空中課堂在教學方式上的距離并不意味著我與學生關系的距離。再過去的9周，在中加的在線學習平臺Canglory上，我深刻的感受到我更加了解我的學生，所謂的“距離”反而幫助我跟學生建立了更加緊密的聯(lián)系，這也將成為我未來教學中有效助力。

The online learning platform for international courses is set up so students can work synchronously with their teachers online at the same time, or asynchronously at their own pace. While my teaching is not face-to-face, I try to maintain a strong online presence for my students in order to help guide their learning. The Canglory platform allows teachers to offer feedback in writing, as audio recordings, and as video messages and I enjoy being able to offer feedback in a variety of styles. The more often students log on and submit work, the more feedback and guidance they receive. I encourage all students to continue to submit their work and take advantage of the scheduled class times where they can interact with their teachers. I want all SCCSC students to know that I miss them and look forward to when we can be together at SCCSC again. Until then, continue to do your best with your online learning and remember your teachers are here to support you.

I am very happy with the Canglory platform. It is so easy to plan and grade assignments and keep everything organized! Learning how to use the website has been an easy process- uploading files, lessons, videos- so great! It is easy to give students immediate feedback and keep in contact with them. I especially like the rubric option.

The support through Meghan and the helpdesk (Jason) is outstanding. Both respond quickly - Meghan even on Friday or Saturday nights - within minutes.

I appreciate that we have been able to successfully continue our students’ education in a worthwhile way - both in the content of what we are teaching, and also in the fact that they are learning how to use an educational website - a skill they will be sure to need in the future.

Today is what has become, more or less, an ordinary day for me. I wake up, have breakfast with my family, and then get busy with work. I login to Canglory and check for messages from students and/or newly submitted student work. The platform has a built-in messaging system which makes it easy to communicate with students. Additionally, the platform has an online gradebook that makes it easy to mark student work, and also makes it easy for students to check their marks. Next, I login to my email, and make sure I don’t have anything important to attend to there. After doing any grading or correspondence that is necessary, I schedule a conference call with the Grade 11 International English teachers. We discuss how things are going. We plan our next unit, being mindful to make the assignments we give students as interactive as possible. We plan an assignment where students will learn and explain new English language idioms via video or audio recordings. We have an exciting unit about the classic play Romeo and Juliet coming up. Our first lesson has a nice graphic, embedded video, and assignments which build upon prior student knowledge. As the Coordinator, I make adjustments to the upcoming week’s lessons to reflect the input of my team. When I finish revising the lesson, I record a video and some audio to go with the week’s assignments and post it. I will monitor the Canglory website throughout the day, and especially in the evening to see if students have submitted any new work. If they have, I will grade it and offer them comments and suggestions for ways they can improve their work. Although I don’t have a conference call with my fellow teachers every day, this is otherwise an ordinary day for me.

Through the Canglory platform, we have used some of the following features:

- Choices: most week's lessons start with a related question

- Books and Pages: provide information for the lessons

- Assignments and Quizzes: give assessments that are relevant

- Forums: give students an opportunity to ask questions for teachers and students

- Video/Audio files: to convey information and allow for dictation and assessment

Using the Canglory platform is very beneficial to our grade 12 students, as 95% of universities in North America use online learning management systems, Moodle being one of the big four, to educate their students. This is an advantage that this year’s students have not only over previous SCCSC students, but over students globally. Being able to track not only when the student logs into the course, but to see the individual’s engagement with every single aspect of the course makes online classroom management simple.

The types of activities, lessons, forums, and the various features on the site allow students to be interactive with the site. Teachers are able to see, hear, and read the work their students submit. Plus, the comment section on assignments allow for easy one-on-one communication. Students now have the time to use the feedback provided by teachers to resubmit their work to display their understanding of the lesson's objectives and thus receive a higher grade...something MANY of my students, in each of the three grade levels, have taken advantage of. The work my students are submitting shows me that many of them are highly engaged with the content and even apply it to their own lives!

The numbers of students who are trying to submit their work correctly and on time has gone up significantly these past weeks, which is heart-warming for me. The time and effort I have put in to create the G12 English course that would challenge but not overwhelm every class level, and be the face and voice that delivers the content is finally paying off. Learning how to edit and navigate the site has been eye-opening, and being able to add this skill to my teaching toolbox is something I, as a 21st century teacher, am happy to have the opportunity to do.

It is challenging to teach and learn from home, but it also gives us a wonderful opportunity to be self-motivated and self-directed lifelong learners.
