Drawing is one of the oldest expressions of mankind and a starting point for painting, sculpture, and many other art forms. In this Unit, Grade 7 inquired into drawing from life and focused on observation to improve their ability to see and draw. The students learned about drawing methods, the purpose and use of different drawing pencils, some shading techniques, and overall challenged and developed their hand-eye coordination through many formative exercises. With the opportunity to fully immerse themselves in seeing and drawing, students can finally arrive at a better connection with their subjects and environments.
One of the most exciting parts was observing and drawing nature in our school’s oval garden. We literally brought our classroom outside! The activity took several lessons and spawned a lot of joy for every student. This creative and meditative state helped to feel proportions, improve observation, and practice skills in a natural way for each one of them. ?
Life drawing is about doing instead of overthinking. Our brain goes into automatic mode, and it is really about your eyes seeing, your ears listening, and your hand drawing. To make the marks on paper the students were bold and courageous, often took risks and challenges, and even learned to ease up and enjoy the process.
As MYP 5 Individuals and Societies students approached the completion of the unit on the Empire Systems, they were challenged with a summative task that not only required excellent content knowledge and strong communication skills but great acting skills as well.
Students were tasked to propose to the Roman emperor Trajan an infrastructure project that would benefit both the empire and the emperor himself. In pairs, students prepared blueprints in which they drew maps, with technical features like roads and aqueducts, and included handwritten arguments as neither printing nor modern tool could be used.
On the day they were summoned by Trajan himself and his two consuls - thanks to the collaboration of three MYP teachers who appeared in their glorious Roman toga - the 10th graders spoke eloquently about their infrastructure projects that would bring more gold and glory to the empire. Despite fierce questioning from the Emperor’s advisers, students were able to defend with conviction their respective projects while showing deep respect to their imperial audience. For a short moment, history has come alive!
This month's Boarding Evening Event has seen PYP boarders clad in funny and colorful pajamas trekking to the library to engage in one of their all-time favorite activities - reading! Their teachers and some MYP students were already waiting for the little ones for a fun night of reading together.
Every part of the library was filled with expressive and enthusiastic reading aloud as students and teachers embark on the adventures of their favorite literary heroes and heroines. Some of our first-graders chose to show the progress they have made in reading English by reading to their adult buddies. It is an emotional moment for their teachers as some of our first-graders joined us in August could not even say a word of English, and here they are now reading fluently! The magic moment in the library was followed by hot chocolate and marshmallows, then back to the dormitory to dream about those great stories we have read. ?
With the uncertainties surrounding the world, Grade 1's celebration of 100 days of school is extra meaningful to all of us here at TWIS. The happy faces of first-graders as they counted 100 objects they brought to school, the 100 objects inside their pi?ata, and the various hundred games they played in class made us reflect how we have been fortunate to be able to meet and interact every day on campus.
The time we spent in our classrooms whose walls are now overflowing with our work, the time we spent crossing the field to go to the gym, the farm or the playground, the time we spent honing our artistic skills in the STEAM building, the time we spent chatting and laughing with our peers …. every day is indeed a blessing. As we celebrate 100 days of school we are grateful for the time we had spent in the company of each other.?
